3-NSPCA: Protect pets from cold

2010-06-24 13:36

Pretoria – With cold conditions set to continue, the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) on Thursday urged owners to protect their pets over the winter season.

Ideally pets should be indoors overnight or if outside at any time they needed protection in the form of blankets, a basket or some kind of shelter, the animal rights watchdog said in a statement.

The NSPCA also appealed to anyone who could spare items that would keep animals warm to donate them to the local SPCA.

“These items can be used for the animals at the SPCAs themselves and also to assist the animals in impoverished areas.”

Owners of livestock were also urged to look after their animals, especially pregnant, calving or lambing animals which needed to be kept close to premises to avoid isolation due to frosting and ice.

“In some areas, heavy frosts have killed off grazing and we ask that supplementary feeding is given to ensure well-being of the animals.”
